The State of Slate: North Country Slate

Continuing our series of industry-related content, we recently had the opportunity to speak with Chris Large, President of North Country Slate. North Country Slate distributes roofing slate produced from the Glendyne Quarry in Quebec, Canada.

The State of Slate: North Country Slate

North Country Unfading Black slate continues to set the benchmark when quality, price, and availability are required for North American–produced ASTM S-1 slate. The Glendyne Quarry remains the largest producer of roofing slate in North America, and thanks to advanced production technology and modern equipment, availability has never been stronger.

For decades, Renaissance has installed and supplied new North Country Slate to our clients. It remains a proven solution when a project demands a non-fading black slate at a reasonable price point with dependable lead times. North Country Slate is particularly well suited for the replacement of older Pennsylvania Bangor slate roofs, Virginia Buckingham slate roofs, as well as newly specified non-fading black slate installations.

Production & Industry Investment
Vermont and New York quarriers continue to invest heavily in automation, improving both production levels and quality standards. These investments have made natural slate the most readily available true 100-year roofing material on the market.

In an era when customers expect construction materials to arrive with Amazon-level speed, North Country Slate continues to work alongside North America’s premier quarriers to ensure natural slate remains the roof of choice for the most prestigious buildings.

Market Perspective

Decision-makers should remember one important distinction: faux, fake, and synthetic “wannabe” products are not slate. They are plastic roofing materials and do not compare — in longevity, performance, or value — to natural stone. Choose wisely.

Seasonal Production Outlook

While the Glendyne Quarry is currently closed for the winter season, orders can be placed now with delivery scheduled for spring and early summer. All indications show that pricing has remained stable and that production levels will be very strong once winter conditions subside. North Country Slate continues to be readily available at a very competitive price point.

Closing Thoughts

We would like to thank Chris Large for sharing his insight and perspective on North Country Slate and the state of the slate roofing industry. We look forward to continued collaboration and to supplying one of the finest natural roofing materials available today.
